How fluoride is helping in the fight against tooth decay in Winchester.

What is fluoride and how does it benefit my teeth?

Fluoride is a mineral that occurs naturally in water across the UK, but most of us know it as an ingredient in many toothpastes. Fluoride helps tooth enamel resist acid attack, and helps fight tooth decay by reducing bacteria’s ability to create acid.

If fluoride’s in the water, why do I need it in my toothpaste?

Although all UK water contains some naturally occurring fluoride, the levels aren’t high enough to make much of a difference to the health of your teeth. Fluoride in your toothpaste helps ‘top up’ the amount of fluoride to an amount that can make a difference.

For over 40 years some areas of the UK have added fluoride to the water – but Winchester isn’t one of them.

For this reason, we recommend you choose a regular off the shelf toothpaste that contains fluoride. If we notice signs of too much fluoride (see below) we’ll discuss this with you at your check-up. If you’re prone to tooth decay you may benefit from a higher dose of fluoride in your toothpaste or mouthwash, but please don’t take any action until you’ve spoken with your Winchester dentist.

Can you have too much fluoride?

Yes, although this is rare in the UK because levels of fluoride exposure are generally low. Even in fluoridation areas (where fluoride is added to the water) instances of dental fluorosis (white speckling or lines on the teeth) remain extremely low. Dental fluorosis is most likely to affect children whose teeth are exposed to too much fluoride whilst they’re still developing.

If you are concerned about the effects of fluoride, please contact your Winchester dentist.
